Alberta Self-employed Farmer Stream is for high net worth Farm Owners who have training and work experience in Farm Management.
The government of Alberta runs and administer this Alberta immigrant Nominee Program (AINP), therefore, all applicants need to apply to AINP. Moreover, in order to qualify for Alberta Self-employed Farmer Stream, You need to submit a proposed Business Plan. The high net worth farm owners must be able to invest a minimum of CDN $500,000 of equity in a primary production farming business in Alberta. AINP consider those applicants who are planning to invest in Alberta’s Agri-food industry.
The AINP continues to accept and process applications and Expressions of Interest (EOIs), with temporary adjustments to some application and assessment processes.
The AINP consider all applications as an expression of interest, and as such, will be processed according to quality of the application (completeness, eligibility), labour market information, occupational supply and demand forecasting, AINP application volumes, and/or any other factors at the AINP’s discretion. By applying to the AINP you acknowledge and agree that your application may not be processed in the order received, or at all.
Program criteria are eligibility minimums, and meeting program criteria does not guarantee that a candidate’s application will be assessed, processed, or granted. The AINP may choose to assess applications with the most current criteria irrespective of the date of submission of an application.
Candidates must have a strong likelihood of becoming economically established in Alberta. The AINP reserves the right to decline applications if the AINP is of the opinion that the candidate may not economically establish in Alberta.
Program Requirements for Alberta Self-employed Farmer stream
- Proof of financial documentation of an existing farm business
- Proof of documentation of education, training and work experience
- Proof of a proposed business plan for the farming enterprise you are considering in Alberta
- proof that a Canadian financial institution is willing to finance your proposed farming business
- proof of Sufficient financial resources
- proof of documents that show a minimum net worth of CDN $500,000.

Applicants must be able to invest a minimum of CDN $500,000 of equity in a primary production farming business in Alberta.
The applicants need to provide documents that show a minimum net worth of CDN $500,000, or confirmation of the ability to access a similar amount of funds from other sources.
The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program reserves the right to demand more from the applicants to invest more than the minimum amount needed.
Primary production investment
Applicants must document their investment plans in a proposed business plan.
Applications representing the best opportunity for growth relevant to Alberta’s agri-food targets will be given priority.
The following individuals who are not eligible under the AINP’s Self-Employed Farmer Stream are listed below.
- refugee claimants
- live-in caregivers currently living in Canada
- temporary foreign workers who live in some other province and are not working and residing in Alberta
- international students studying in Canada
